Add Facebook Messenger Popup to Your Site

[Category: Programming]
Jun. 24, 2019

Before you begin, you have to have a Facebook account to create the Facebook App ID that is required. You are also going to need to create a business Page so that your Messenger account is under your business name. Prepare for at least 30 minutes to set this up.

Facebook offers instructions on connecting Messenger to your website. Unfortunately, they are difficult to follow, and the code contains typos. Feel free to give the Facebook instructions a try; they may finally fix the instructions so you may be in luck.

Step 1. If you have already created a Facebook business page, skip the rest of this step. Log unto this Facebook link to create a business page.

Step 2. Get your Facebook page ID. To find your Facebook ID number "9999990000088888"(a) Go to Business Settings, (b) Click Business Info, (c) Below the Business Manager Info section, you'll see your ID number. Copy that number you are going to need it.

Step 3. Create an App ID. Note: This is not connected to your business page yet. Don't get lost here; stick to the script. Visit Facebook Developer Page for Apps. You will be asked to give the App a name; it is only for you so that you can easily identify the App. Next, enter your email address, use the one associated with your Facebook account; it is only for notification purposes. Facebook will give you an App ID # something like App ID: 0000000000111111. Copy that number you are going to need it later on. You can at this time connect the App if you like to your business page, but it is not necessary.

Step 4. Insert the code just before ‹/body› tag on your HTML page, the reason is you want the messenger icon to load after the rest of the page has loaded.

Before placing: Bold numbers need to be changed. 9999990000088888 (swap with the Facebook Page ID), 0000000000111111 (swap with App ID), #000000 (theme color - change it to match your website).

‹div class="fb-customerchat"
  window.fbAsyncInit = function() {
      appId            : '0000000000111111',
      autoLogAppEvents : true,
      xfbml            : true,
      version          : 'v2.11'
(function(d, s, id){
     var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];
     if (d.getElementById(id)) {return;}
     js = d.createElement(s); = id;
     js.src = "";
     fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);
   }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));

Nice. Better than paying for a service no one uses.

The only reason Facebook continues to get away with this is that they are so big.
